Werrimull netball season preview

WERRIMULL

COACH: Anna Thomson

2023 SEASON: Premiers

FIRST MONTH: Meringur (H), Cardross (A), Nangiloc (H), Bambill (A)

ARRIVALS: Erin Sell, Chelsea Newey

DEPARTURES: Olivia Putland

REIGNING premiers Werrimull still have the hunger to go again following their breathtaking grand final victory last year.

After heading into the contest against Nangiloc as underdogs, the Magpies claimed a thrilling one-goal win in one of the great grand finals in recent history.

However, coach Anna Thomson said the playing group was looking ahead to the new campaign while still feeling the positive effects of the flag.

The Magpies regain Erin Sell, a Dot Wilson Trophy runner-up, in mid-court and have added shooter Chelsey Newey (née Henderson) from Gol Gol.

Defender Olivia Putland has relocated from the district but her absence will allow Thomson to move back into a more familiar role.

“It’s pretty exciting,” Thompson said.

“We’re right back into the swing of things now and can’t wait for the new season.

“It’s definitely weird.

“I know personally I’m not really sure anything will top last year, coming back from surgery to win the grand final.

“I think we’re all still on a high afterwards but at the same time the girls aren’t talking about it too much.

“We’re focusing on this year and the team we have.”

Thomson said the additions of Sell and Newey would add to the the team’s flexibility.

“To have a mid-court player and a goalie come in is fantastic,” she said.

“It also allows me to move back to defence.

“Having that extra versatility will be nice.

“We were perhaps a little stuck in certain positions last year but I think this we’ll have a bit more flexibility.

“Pre-season in full swing now and numbers are good across the board at the club, which is great to see.”

Werrimull begin their premiership defence against Lake Cullullerine co-tenants Meringur.
