Demons ready for revenge

WITH the minor premiership wrapped up, Nangiloc now turns attention to finally breaking through for the big one.

The Demons have never won the Millewa Netball Association A Grade premiership despite coming close in recent years.

Their last flag was in 1988 when the competition only consisted of senior and junior grades.

In an unusual prospect, Nangiloc face Bambill in Saturday’s qualifying final at Alcheringa Oval, seven days after defeating them 39-33 in the final round of the home and away season.

The victory gives them a 2-1 record against the Saints this year, however the margin in all three games has never been greater than seven goals.

Nangiloc co-coach Ginine Sluiter said the playing group is excited about the prospect of making another grand final after going down to the Saints in last year’s decider at Lake Cullulleraine.

“We’re obviously happy to have won at the weekend but there’s always things you can change from each game,” she said.

“Everybody seems to be in a good head space and we had our full team back on Saturday which I think helps our confidence a bit more.

“Bambill have got some really good players, and so do we so we’re expecting another solid match-up.

“Obviously it hurt losing to them in the grand final last year, so we’re trying to avoid a repeat of that.

“We have so much versatility in our team, a number of the girls can play in multiple positions so that gives us the ability to change things around if needed.”

While the top two will play off for an immediate avenue to the grand final on September 2, Werrimull and Gol Gol will collide on Sunday in an elimination final on the Hawks’ home court.

Gol Gol will have gained some confidence following their 10-goal win over Meringur last week, recent history is against them. The Magpies have won all three head-to-head contests in 2023, the closest game being a five-goal margin in round 9.

Games begin at 1pm each day.
