Swallows stay in the hunt

IN a game filled to the brim with incredible feats of athleticism, Irymple kept touch with the four with a 50-43 victory over a spirited Robinvale Euston at John James Oval.

The Eagles brought the margin to just two goals late in the game, but conceded multiple interceptions late as they pushed for victory.

The win brings Irymple a step close to fourth place after Ouyen United’s draw with Mildura.

Swallows’ goal attack Indi Spratt continued her ascent as one of the best young players in the competition with an outstanding performance.

Her opposite number, Georgia Giofrelle, did likewise at the opposite end of the court, with her shooting ability from all angles a real feature.

When it counted, Irymple were cleaner with possession, and the passing ability of Shakara Delcastegne and McKenzie Ryan worked wonders for Spratt and Meg Hammond.

Delcastegne sang the praises of the up-and-coming Eagles outfit.

“They have improved so much and it was tight the entire game, so it was good to get out in that last quarter and give ourselves a bit of breathing room on the scoreboard,” she said.

“We’re building, we’re coming off a few losses and the draw last week so it was good to get the win today.

“I feel like we’ve become a lot closer as a team during the season and I think we’re getting better every week.”

Young defender Lily Droffelaar continues to improve at A Grade level, with her inclusion allowing the flexibility to play Ryan in attack.

“Lily and Jorja (Delcastegne) working together in defence has been working really well, especially since she plays Under 17s earlier in the day,” Delcastegne said.

Outside of her customary centre role, the Eagles’ Taneh Romeo provided an agile target, while Georgie Kelly was impressive in defence, and Mia Doherty covered the court superbly in mid-court.
