Kia optimistic despite draw

IMPERIALS goal shooter Kia Scott said her side has it in them to push for SFNL A Grade netball finals.

The girls in green and white are seventh on the table after Round 11 following a dramatic 48-all draw with Robinvale Euston at John James Oval.

It was Imps’ second stalemate of the season, however, if those two results fell their way they would be even on points with Irymple and Merbein in fifth and sixth respectively, and just two adrift of fourth-placed Ouyen United.

Scott, named this week’s SFNL Netballer of the Round, said her side is building with six games to go before finals.

“We definitely have it in us,” she said.

“There’s been a few times we’ve walked away from games thinking we could have won, but it’s a very new side we have this year so I guess we’ve taken our time to find our feet.

“Meg McManus and I are the only ones who are still here from last year’s team. It’s also a very young side plus we’ve had new players join the club like Tracey Sherlock, who’s obviously a great basketballer, and Laura Hayter who’s come across from Ouyen.

“Hopefully as the season goes on we’ll get a few better results.”

Scott described Saturday’s result against the Eagles as “intense”, a sentiment shared by opposing coach Hayley Siddons.

“We probably walked away feeling like we could have won as we were three goals up late in the game,” Scott said.

“It was an intense game of netball and one that was great to be part of.

“Sometimes in these games, you think about those shots that may have just missed or could have tipped in but you can’t dwell on it.”

Scott believes having a more settled side in recent weeks has made a difference to how the team has played, with her and Hayter now having a hold on the starting shooting positions.

The A-grade side also seems to be building in confidence under netball master coach Kym Mayne.

“Having some of these positions settled has made a massive difference not just for us (in attack), but across the court,” she said.

“We are young and we do have some amazing netballers coming through, especially through the Under 17s right now.

“Grace Kelly is one player in her first year of seniors, she came in at WA on the weekend and was named in our best players so it’s great to see her performing so well.”

Imperials are at home to Red Cliffs this week, the team they drew within the opening game of the season.
