WERRIMULL’S A Grade netballers found their feet early on Saturday to help set up a 44-32 win against Gol Gol at Lake Cullulleraine.
The Pies secured an early lead that blew out further as the early quarters progressed.
While Gol Gol were tough in all areas of the court, Werrimull were one step ahead, landing almost every goal attempt and applying heavy pressure in defence.
The Pies were ahead by eight at the half-time siren, the same margin they finished the game with.
Aislinn Campbell was unstoppable in goals, scoring 39 of the team’s 44.
Werrimull goal keeper Cassie Morris made it tough for Gol Gol’s shooters to get into a solid position in the ring, while wing defence Maddison Maher was fast, securing turnovers for the Pies.
Gol Gol’s Abbey Lovell performed well in goals for the team, before making a shift into goal defence, where her height allowed her to combat the Pies’ shooters well.
Goal keeper Amy Hunt worked hard for the Hawks, intercepting the ball multiple times, while centre Jessemy Thornton was able to use her speed and agility to shine across the court.
The win allowed Werrimull to overtake Gol Gol on the ladder. The Pies now sit third behind Bambill and Nangiloc.
Werrimull have won two games, but have lost to both top teams.
The Hawks have won against Cardross and drew against Bambill and lost to Nangiloc and now Werrimull, slotting in fourth on the ladder, ahead of Meringur and Cardross.
In the day’s other games, Bambill defeated the winless Lions 43-35 at Cardross.
Best for Bambill were Erin Hird, Georgia Bower and Ebony Roberts.
Best for Cardross were Melissa Kennedy, Kristy Middleton and co-coach Ebony Greenhill.
At Nangiloc, the Demons continued their streak with a convincing defeat of Meringur.
Meringur fell short of Nangi, scoring only 27 to the Demons’ 52.
Best for Nangiloc were co-coaches Tamara Loveridge and Ginine Sluiter, with strong support from Kristy Middleton.
Best for Meringur were Lakayla Pettit, Susie Wilson and coach Maddy McPhee.
