Kangas clicking despite losses

MERINGUR will be feeling confident on the netball court this weekend as they aim to get their first win of the year against Cardross.

The Kangaroos had a tough start to the season, coming up against Werrimull, who finished last year’s home-and-away season undefeated, before taking on reigning premiers Bambill.

Despite losing both games, coach Maddy McPhee said her team had been performing “really well”.

“I’ve been really happy with how the girls have been playing,” she said.

“They’ve just been connecting and building on from what we did last year.”

Meringur, which maintained its core group after the end of last season, lost last weekend’s game against Bambill by eight goals.

McPhee said the girls had done well and just needed to work on getting through the full 60 minutes.

“It was literally probably the last five minutes that they got away from us,” she said.

“Seeing as they were the reigning premiers we were really happy with the results we had.”

McPhee said the girls had begun clicking together, with everyone performing well across the court.

“Our attacking has been really good, our defence is working there, so it is now just bringing it all together and getting the four quarters,” she said.

“Our captain Susie Wilson, she has been a driving force through the middle and in our shooter circle, Jordan Kerr has really picked up and getting lots of movement in there.”

Meringur face off with Cardross this Saturday and it is expected that both teams will be eager to get a win.

McPhee said she was excited to see how the girls would go against the Lions at Lake Cullulleraine.

“We know that Cardross have quite a few new players and changes but we are still really excited,” she said.

“From the interleague, we saw a few of them like Corrine Best, (we saw) how she played, and Montanna Ezzey.”

McPhee said the Roos were hoping for the win but stated that teams were “really even” this season, making things unpredictable.

“I think the girls will be really excited if we get the win,” she said.

“But it is all even, so it could be anyone’s game.”

Cardross faced off with last year’s grand final contenders Nangiloc in round 1, before Gol Gol in round 2.

Despite losing both games, the scores were very close, 34 to 31 in both games.

Meanwhile, at Mildura Senior College, Bambill will be taking on Werrimull.

Werrimull will be aiming to jump from fourth on the ladder to third or even second by defeating Bambill.

Bambill will be looking to separate themselves from Gol Gol with another win.

Gol Gol and Nangiloc played on Friday night.
