Finals losses burn for Werrimull

COACH: Anna Thomson

ARRIVALS: Nil.

DEPARTURES: Alison Walker

AFTER a “disappointing” end to the season last year, Werrimull are hoping to redeem themselves and earn back their spot on top.

Werrimull finished last year’s home and away season undefeated, earning them the top spot on the ladder.

However, during finals, the team were unable to secure a win, defeated by Nangiloc and Bambill.

Coach Anna Thomson said this year the team were coming to redeem themselves.

“It was a disappointing finish last year,” she said.

“We definitely do have a bit of redemption and things to regain but we are super excited to see what we can do this year.”

The side has lost Alison Walker, while Thomson and Erin Sell will be out for the first half of the season due to injury.

Thomson said she was out due to an ankle reconstruction.

“We have lost a few this year,” she said.

“But hopefully come mid-year we will have a few back from pregnancies and injuries and we will hopefully be stronger than ever.”

Thomson said the team had been focusing on regaining fitness, especially after the team’s 14-minute overtime loss to Bambill during the finals.

“Having that 14 minutes of overtime was what killed us,” she said.

“We are definitely focusing on our fitness and getting that back.”

Thomson said it was also important to ensure players bonded as a team before they hit the court.

“With the few changes, we are getting the team bonding again because that is super important,” she said.

“I believe no matter how talented you are, if you don’t get along you are never going to play well together.”

Werrimull will take on Meringur at the lake in round one of the season.
