Too quick to handle

SUNRAYSIA 68 d NORTH CENTRAL 38

BEST: SFNL: Catherine Brown. NC: Meg Lockhart.

WE were promised speed, and we got it.

Sunraysia’s interleague netball side was set to play a fast game style with precision passing and they delivered in spades as the green and gold were ruthless against North Central in Sea Lake.

A double-figure lead at quarter-time for the Sunraysia girls was merely the starting point of a big day as they went on to record a 30-goal victory over their adversaries.

While it was a relatively young Sunraysia squad, it already boasted a wealth of experience, led by captain Christie Becker.

Liz Rowe, Ebony Littore and Demi Wall functioned well as an attacking unit, however it all started with the defence. Ouyen United’s Catherine Brown was instrumental in foiling North Central’s attacking forays and was a deserved winner of the best-on-court medal.

Sunraysia coach Loretta Thompson said Brown’s character was exemplary.

“She’s (Brown) a really hard worker, just follows everything up and is really tough to play on,” she said.

“Her commitment to travel from Underbool each week for training meant you just knew that the commitment was going to come on the court as well.”

Thompson said she was confident in her side’s ability to work together.

“We were confident in ourselves coming down here, and our training was really good over the last couple of weeks,” she said. “It was good to see the girls gel together as a team on the court.

“It’s a bit of an unknown when you don’t know what the other league is like but we were confident in our own play and what we put together at training and we knew we had some depth on the bench.

“It was high scoring. Our accuracy was really good with a high percentage of our shots going in during the day from our three shooters.

“It’s great just to be back on the court and it’s a lot of fun. Every Saturday we compete against each other but it’s great just to have this time to have a bit of fun together.”
