Speed will be the key

SPEED will be the weapon Sunraysia’s senior interleague netball side will rely upon today.

While it won’t be a tall SFNL squad that faces up to North Central in Sea Lake, it will be fast and full of youthful exuberance.

Experienced coach Loretta Thompson will be at the helm of the talented team. Ladder leaders Wentworth have three representatives in Liz Rowe, Demi Wall and Christie Becker, as do Imperials with

Ebony and Ally Littore and Meg McManus. Abbey Madden (Mildura), Shakara Delcastegne (Irymple), Maddy Toms (South Mildura) and Catherine Brown (Ouyen United) complete the line-up.

Defender Becker said the opportunity to represent the league was always exciting.

“It’s been a long time coming,” she said. “We won in 2018 but went down in 2019 so we’re definitely hoping to return to the winner’s books this year.

“We do have a lot of youth on the team and it’s not a tall squad, but we will be quick. The young girls have a lot of speed and smarts and hopefully we’ll use that to our advantage.

“It does feel good, and it’s always fun to play against an opposition you’ve never seen before.

“Coming out of lockdown this year it’s been similar in the SFNL. There are a lot of new faces that you don’t know a huge amount about. So to play against girls from another competition that you have no experience against is exciting in a way. You don’t know if they will have someone who is really tall, or if they will be similar to use and be a smaller speedier side.”

Becker said Thompson will be a great coach to have at the helm.

“She has a lot of experience and ideas to bring to the table,” she said.

“We also feel we have pretty good depth around the squad at the moment so hopefully we can head down and celebrate a win.

“I might be a bit biased with the Wentworth connection, but I think Demi Wall will be great. She’s so quick, you won’t find too many faster players in Sunraysia. She’ll likely play wing attack and really be creative for the shooters.”

Kayla Martin will also be representing SFNL as an umpire.

Game begins at 12.45pm.
