Aiming to be undefeated

WINNING seems to come naturally for Mildura City’s S-League senior women’s side, but they have further glory in mind.

The women’s soccer powerhouse confirmed their eighth league title in nine seasons following their 5-2 victory over Nichols Point last week.

However, coach Damien Argiro said the squad is “keeping a lid on it” until the season is completed.

“We’re aiming to get through undefeated and hopefully win the finals as well because you’re always aiming to win both, but the girls have been really humble about it which is great,” he said.

“It’s also given us an opportunity to play around with some different formations and to give some of the younger ones some opportunities as well.

“Because it’s been such a good team for so long it can be kind of hard to manage expectations, so I’ve been drumming into the girls not to worry about the points tally and be prepared to play each week.

“We’ve been playing a bit more of an offensive game style in the last few weeks so we’ve managed to score a few more goals, but also conceded a few more while we’re at it.

“It’s a very young team still, I think our oldest player is in their early 20’s so if they can stick together there’s a really good side there for the coming years as well.”

In previous years players as young as 14 have found themselves starting in City’s women’s side and while that hasn’t the case so much this year, Argiro said the younger squad members will get greater chances in the final weeks of the season.

“We’re trying to put the emphasis into the junior side of things and developing through the ranks,” he said.

“Some of the younger girls have spent some more time on the bench this year but their work doesn’t go unnoticed, they still have an important role to play.

“I think some of the team will be heading away to uni next year so the opportunities will be there for them.”

City’s unbeaten run will look to continue against Irymple Knights at 1pm this Sunday.

Meanwhile, in senior men’s action at 3.30pm, Mildura City’s men’s side can take a step towards confirming their fourth consecutive title with a win over Nichols Point.

Challengers Irymple Knights will look to keep pace when they face Three Colours.
