Pointers pile on goals in second half

A BRACE for Newton Likaveke highlighted a big win for Nichols Point in their return to S-League action following the school-holiday break.

The Pointers claimed their third win of the Football Federation Sunraysia senior men’s campaign, remaining clear in third place on the ladder with their 5-1 result.

Likaveke scored the opening goal 14 minutes into the game but it remained the only ball in the back of the net at the long break.

After he scored his second five minutes into the second half, Nichols Point put the game beyond doubt with a 10-minute stretch between 70 and 80 minutes where Dean Austin, Connor O’Callaghan (penalty) and Jack Almond all struck.

Three Colours’ Oktay Samet would deny the opposition the clean sheet with an 81st minute penalty.

Meanwhile, Mildura City extended their lead at the top of the table, with Irymple Knights having the bye.

The defending champions proved too strong for Mildura United in the 4-0 win.

Young gun Campbell Brown opened his account four minutes in, and while United would deny City another goal before the long break, they would pile on the pressure in the second half.

Brandon Pollifrone took his season total to seven goals with his 56th minute strike, before Meric Kiran and Nicolas Woods completed the result.

On Friday night the senior women’s teams from Nichols Point and Irymple Knights played a standalone game under lights at Soccer Park.

Both sides are closely matched this season and it proved a tight tussle with a 0-0 draw.

It was the second game the Pointers have earned points from this season, while Knights have an even two-win, two-draw and two-loss record from their campaign.

Defending champions Mildura City had the bye.

The S-League season will be two-thirds complete after Sunday’s matches, which includes Knights playing home games at Henshilwood Reserve for the first time this year.
