City’s strong Cup start

MILDURA City warmed up for their 2024 S-League title defence in ideal fashion with victory over Nichols Point in the opening game of the pre-season tournament on Sunday.

The Rudi Horvat Round Robin Cup began on the right note for the winners of the last three senior men’s titles, who scored a 2-0 win courtesy of goals from Meric Liran and Nicholas Lia.

It was the only men’s top-grade game with a conclusive result, as Irymple Knights and Mildura United played out a 2-2 draw.

An early brace from Joe Davis gave Knights a two-goal advantage, but Victoire Mwenyamali soon answered for United before a 50th minute own goal, coming off a Frederick Kakari cross.

In the sole senior women’s contest, Nichols Point ad Irymple Knights shared the honours in a 1-1 draw.

The Pointers opened the scoring when youngster Heidi Gibson converted a penalty at the 13 minute mark, before Jasmin Balchin scored in the 28th minute to equalise.

Matches continue this Sunday with two women’s and four men’s round-robin fixtures before the opening round.
