GREATER interest from outside Sunraysia comes as a sign of growth in the lead-up to the second annual AMES Multicultural Cup.
The two-day soccer extravaganza, to be held at Mildura’s Aero Ovals, is aimed at enabling players from a migrant or refugee background to play the world game.
The cup was established in a fantastic inaugural event 12 months ago in which senior men’s and over 35 sides competed from around the country.
“It’s been really good,” Football Federation Sunraysia general manager Susan Watts said.
“We’ve been able to get a lot more teams coming from outside of Sunraysia – we had probably more local teams 12 months ago.
“Local players will still be involved but it’s great to have more sides coming up and from different nationalities as well.
“This year we don’t have a women’s or junior competition, just the senior men and over 35s again.
“We’re promoting a real picnic atmosphere, with come and try sessions taking place on Saturday for anyone wanting to give the sport a go.”
The tournament, which will run across both on Saturday and Sunday, is supported by migrant and refugee settlement agency AMES Australia, alongside Football Federation Sunraysia and Football Victoria.
Play starts at 10am each day.
