Soccer success story’s sequel

AFTER a fantastic inaugural event 12 months ago, Mildura will again host the AMES Australia Multicultural Cup soccer tournament next month.

The multicultural soccer extravaganza celebrating Sunraysia’s growing cultural diversity and love of sport saw 30 teams from across the country compete over multiple age groups in 2022.

The tournament, on October 7 and 8 at Aero Ovals, is supported by migrant and refugee settlement agency AMES Australia, alongside Football Federation Sunraysia and Football Victoria.

FFS general manager Susan Watts said the federation was pleased to be partner with AMES Australia to attract more newly arrived young people into Mildura’s soccer family.

“Football is the world game and Mildura is very multicultural city,” she said.

“So it makes absolute sense that we would welcome people new to our city, and who have come from all over the world, into our football community.”

AMES Australia CEO Cath Scarth said that community sport was a fantastic way for newcomers to integrate into the broader Australian community.

“We are delighted to be partnering with Football Federation Sunraysia in supporting the tournament that will help to welcome migrant community members and support them to make connections into the broader community,” she said.

“We also see the tournament as fun and practical way of welcoming people new to Mildura and the Sunraysia community.”

Players can register individually or as teams; and teams can be named after a country or a region.

The competitions will include under 16 boys, under 16 girls, open men, open women and over 35s.

Teams and players are invited to register by September 30 by contacting Susan Watts on 0410 557 485 or by email swatts@ffs.org.au
