Colours grab finals berth

THREE Colours have secured an S-League semi-final berth with a 2-0 victory over Nichols Point in their Round 15 clash.

In the final home and away round of the campaign, the top four has now settled next week’s finalists, with Colours facing the daunting task of taking down title winner Mildura City.

In Football Federation Sunraysia, title winners are the team on top of the ladder at the conclusion of the regular season, with the grand final winners to be decided after an elimination finals series.

Equal on points heading into the final round, a win for either Colours or Pointers would sit them clear in fourth place and earn a match-up with City.

Adetokunbo Adetoro’s 13th minute goal had Colours on the front foot early, and an own goal from the Pointers defence sealed the result.

They could have increased the final margin after Point goal keeper Brady Burrows fouled David Chick in the box, but Colours were unable to convert the penalty.

The result was Colours’ third victory of the season.

Meanwhile, Irymple Knights left it late to win their final round clash against Mildura United, with Vanuatuan midfielder Donald Jerry’s second goal in the 90th minute sealing the 3-2 victory.

It was a chaotic end to the first half with Jerry opening the scoring 38 minutes in, and defender Nathan Montelone doubling the advantage with two minutes remaining.

United scored two goals in as many minutes through Tien Dat Nguyen and Justino Bili to take it to 2-2 at half-time.

The second-half was an arm wrestle but Jerry managed the winner in the dying minutes, advantaged by United going down to 10 men following a second yellow card.

In senior women’s action, a brace from Nichols Point young gun Maia Gowers led her side to a 2-0 victory over Irymple Knights and second place on the table.

Gowers, who has been representing Fulham United in Adelaide, has scored five goals in her previous two games for the Pointers, who will face Knights again in the semi-final for the opportunity to play Mildura City.

The first week of the finals series is on Sunday before a break to allow juniors to compete in the South Australian Junior Soccer Association Championships in Broken Hill.

Finals are likely to conclude on September 10 but should another match be required, it will take place the following week.

S-League presentation evening is on Friday, September 15.
