NICHOLS Point’s slim S-League senior women’s title hopes remain alive following their 1-0 win over defending champions Mildura City.
Skipper Isabella Gove’s 33rd minute strike ensured the girls in orange and black stayed in the hunt for overall honours.
City still hold an 11-point advantage thanks to some forfeited results, alongside their wins earlier in the season, and are still odds-on favourites, but the Pointers at least still have a chance.
It’s now 10 goals in two games for Nichols Point after the previous round’s 9-1 thrashing of Irymple Knights.
“City are always hard to play against, they are a well-coached side,” coach David Inglis said.
“I think they were one player short but we also had a few that weren’t at 100 per cent, but it was a fantastic game from both sides, a really tough battle that could have gone either way.
“I think our younger players are getting a bit more confident at the moment but a few of our more experienced players have been available in recent weeks after injuries and unavailability, which has helped.
“If everyone has full teams in the back part of the year I think the gap between all of us will get tighter.”
In senior men’s competition, Irymple Knights have leapfrogged Mildura City to the top of the table following their 3-0 win over Mildura.
With City having the bye, Knights equalised City’s points tally and moved ahead on goal difference.
Following his brace the previous round, Anthimos Sitaras opened the scoring in the 30th minute, but United’s defending ensured it took another 40 minutes of game time to find the back of the net.
That goal came from Vanuatuan Christopher Kokaree before Kieran Burrows scored his sixth of the season in the 87th minute to ensure top spot.
Three Colours’ 3-2 victory over Nichols Point lifted them from the foot of the table, relegating the Pointers to that position.
Colours’ David Chick and Pointers’ Jack Mills scoring within two minutes of each other set the tone for the contest, however an own goal and a Brandon Zaffina strike right before half-time gave Three Colours a 3-1 lead at the break.
Nichols Point were up and about following Pita Foliaki’s 64th minute goal, but Three Colours’ defence held tough for their second win of the season.
