Woods’ hat-trick puts City back on S-League winners’ list

A HAT-TRICK from the experienced Nicolas Woods helped defending S-League men’s champions Mildura City back onto the winners list following their first loss in four years.

The two-horse race for the Football Federation Sunraysia men’s crown continued as City and Irymple Knights claimed authoritative wins in Round 9 last weekend.

City were in a destructive mood when they took down Nichols Point 9-3, getting on the board just three minutes in when Woods converted a penalty kick.

The Pointers were buoyant following Jack Mills’ 17th-minute equaliser.

However, that was quickly neutralised when Jasper Gemits gave City the lead back just two minutes later.

Woods and skipper Jacob Rodi scored before the half to give City a 4-1 lead at the break.

Lachlan Giles’ strike just four minutes into the second half gave Nichols Point hope, but five goals to three across the final 40 minutes, including three in the final 10, gave City a commanding win an an important goal difference boost.

Under lights at Soccer Park on Saturday, Irymple Knights continued their superb form with a 4-1 victory over Three Colours.

Anthimos Sitaras set the tone for Knights early with a fifth-minute goal before he completed his brace and Chris Romeo added another in the final six minutes before half-time.

Three Colours’ French striker Sofiane El Ghhazali brought his side a goal back in the 51st minute but the Knights’ defence held firm before Romeo scored his second in the final 10 minutes.

Romeo is the first men’s player to have reached double figures for the season, leading the Golden Boot.

In senior womens, Nichols Point’s massive 9-1 win over Irymple Knights has given Mildura City a seemingly unassailable lead for the title.

In their third encounter for the season the Pointers finally got their breakthrough win in style, led by four goals from Imogen Tynan and a hat-trick for young gun Caitlyn Czapla.

Aleisha Burrows found the back of the net two minutes into the second half for Knights but the Pointers would add another five goals to round out the victory.

The action will continue on Sunday at Aero Ovals Soccer Park.
