NPL2 debut for young Mildura soccer star

YOUNG Mildura soccer player Christian Pollifrone made his senior debut for Brunswick Juventus on Friday in the team’s third win of the season in the Victoria NPL2.

Against league rivals Brunswick City, the Zebras were able to win 1-0 in a game where Pollifrone subbed on in the 90th minute.

“It was a big game to be involved in … and it was good to get the three points,” he said.

“It was a good experience … it was good just to break into the squad and get a bit of a run. I probably only played about five minutes but I was expecting that.”

Pollifrone was given the opportunity to play at his preferred position, the left wing and in his small amount of field time he certainly made his presence felt, being cautioned for a tackle.

The 19-year-old was amused when asked about the play.

“I was defending the corner and I was running out of defence, I was trying to get onto the ball and I think was going too fast and I just missed the ball right when he kicked it at the last minute and got the player,” he said.

“It was a lot different, as soon as you get to the seniors there’s more bigger bodies and it’s a lot more physical and fast-paced for sure.”

The game was a special one for Pollifrone and his family who were down to witness the special occasion as well as the 50th anniversary of local club, Mildura City.

“(Mildura City) means heaps, I was born playing for the club, making that senior team was a big thing,” he said.

“I’m always supporting them from here and I’m rooting for them to win the title again this year.”

Pollifrone made his start at Brunswick Juventus at the start of the season with the Under 21s side currently placed seventh with eight wins, two draws and nine losses in the 14-team competition.

“It’s been good, we’ve been trying to climb up (the ladder) so I’m hoping we can get some results in the last few games,” he said. “It should be a good finish, in the top half would be good.

“I’ve started training with the seniors all the time and they will just tell me if I need to play 21s or seniors which is good.”
