Socceroo Foster here for multicultural cup

MILDURA will host a spectacular multicultural soccer tournament celebrating Sunraysia’s growing cultural diversity and love of sport.

The AMES Australia Multicultural Cup tournament will run over the weekend of October 8-9 at Aero Ovals, with former Socceroo captain and refugee advocate Craig Foster as special guest.

Foster will speak at a dinner on the Saturday night and will also appear at the tournament.

AMES Australia chief executive Cath Scarth said sport was a fantastic way for newcomers to integrate into the broader Australian community.

“We are delighted to be partnering with Football Federation Sunraysia in supporting the tournament that will help to welcome migrant community members and support them to make connections into the broader community,” she said.

“We also see the tournament as fun and practical way of welcoming people new to Mildura and the Sunraysia community.”

FFS general manager Susan Watts said the federation was pleased to be partnering with AMES Australia to attract more newly arrived young people into Mildura’s soccer family.

“Football is the world game and Mildura is very multicultural city. So, it makes absolute sense that we would welcome people new to our city, and who have come from all over the world, into our football community,” Ms Watts said.

Players can register individually or as teams; and teams can be named after a country or a region. The competitions will include under-16 boys, under-16 girls, open men, open women and over 35s.

Teams and players are invited to register by September 30 via email at swatts@ffs.org.au
