Mildura City takes win in penalty shootout

A DRAMATIC penalty shootout was required by Mildura City to make it through to the next stage of the Australia Cup on Sunday.

In the preliminary round of the former FFA Cup competition, it was the home team that came up trumps after a 1-1 draw with Melbourne side Waverley Wanderers at Soccer Park led to a shootout that the City-zens would go on to win 5-4.

The Sunraysia side’s next opponent is still to be determined.

Mildura City were leading thanks to a Joseph Pollifrone strike, however Waverley would equalise to send the match into overtime. With the score still deadlocked it came down to scoring from the spot, which City were able to do.

The rebranded FFA Cup fixture is the biggest soccer club competition in the country, with the current S-League Champions taking on the Men’s State League 4 East side on Sunday.
