SFNL struggles to fill board roles

THE Sunraysia Football and Netball League has struggled to attract nominations to fill the 10-member board ahead of its annual general meeting this weekend.

There are five vacancies up for grabs at the AGM, which starts at 3pm on Sunday, at the Mildura Working Man’s Club.

However, SFNL executive officer Peter Walker said the league had only received two nominations, which would leave three vacancies on the board.

Two of the five outgoing board members, Peter Rhoden and Michael Brown, have nominated to run again. But the other three – Karen Martin, Heath Kendall and Mark Rogerson – have chosen not to after their terms expired.

The league’s president since 2019, Paul Matheson, is not up for re-election.

Sunraysia Daily asked Matheson if he was intending to run again as president, but he did not respond.

Walker said the league would consider accepting nominations for the board if they came in at Sunday’s meeting.

“I’ve had some enquiries from clubs about people who might be interested in running, so I’ve shared nomination forms with them. But at this point in time, nothing’s come in,” Walker said on Tuesday.

“If we were to receive nominations from the floor at the AGM, we’ll have to look at that.

“The board has the ability to appoint board members after the AGM. If there are three vacancies, we’ll advertise those positions.”

Once the early make-up of the board has been determined on Sunday, its members and a representative from each club will vote on the presidency.

Walker said the clubs had not raised any issues for debate as part of general business at the AGM.

However, he said there would be “some constitutional business to tidy up”.

“Several motions of amendment pertaining to the SFNL Constitution have been proposed,” Walker said.

“As per Constitution rules, ‘the Constitution of the league, and any rules made under the Constitution, must be in accordance with the Constitution and By-Laws of AFL Victoria Country’.

“Also, five motions of amendment are being proposed relating to the SFNL Netball By-Laws.

“All amendments will be voted on at the upcoming AGM.”
