Sunraysia Football Netball League zooms in on major problems

SUNRAYSIA Football and Netball League (SFNL) board members met last night via Zoom to determine how the immediate future of the competition looks following the state-wide snap lockdown.

The situation of current rounds, no training as a group, potential border closures and potentially having no crowds are all issues that were discussed.

Last weekend already saw footballers and netball miss a week of action, and although they can potentially return this week if given the green light by the Victorian Government, there are still further issues at hand.

Last year SFNL clubs made their ‘no crowd, no play’ stance well known, with entry prices, canteen and bar takings making up the majority of their income.

SFNL president Paul Matheson said at this stage “nothing is off the table”.

“Obviously we have to decide if we call this week off or not, and if we do play, what does it look like, and are clubs willing to play if there are crowd restrictions,” he said.

“History shows that once these restrictions are lifted there is still an overlay in terms of the amount of people allowed in.

“We sent out emails to clubs to get some more feedback from them in terms of what they can work with and what their non-negotiables are for the season.

“We can’t sit on our hands and wait for protocols to come through, even if the government has still got to make decisions, we need to be clear about how everything looks for us.”
