SFNL’s charitable gesture

THE Sunraysia Football Netball League (SFNL) will donate all revenue raised from its pre-season competition to the Millewa Drought Relief and Bush Fire Relief funds.

The decision to donate all funds raised from the March 28 competition, which will be held at Merbein’s Kenny Park, was made at the league’s recent board meeting.

SFNL executive officer Peter Walker said he encouraged all clubs and their supporters to get behind the initiative.

“The board is mindful that our neighbouring Millewa farming communities continue to be hard hit by the dry and drought conditions over the past two seasons and need support,” Walker said.

“These families are doing it pretty tough and, while the amount is not huge, I’m sure with the continued contributions towards the relief initiative by local individuals, groups, associations and businesses, any financial assistance offering aid and support to these neighbouring communities is very important.

“Also, to financially support the Bushfire Relief Fund following the devastating impact of fires across Victoria and many other parts of the country was high on the agenda.

“There has been a lot of energy from various sections of the community on how they can support and assist bushfire-affected areas with the intent to raise funds, recognise the efforts of firefighters and acknowledge the victims of the bushfires”.

The annual SFNL pre-season competition involves all clubs and provides a good hitout for teams prior to the start of the season, which kicks off on April 10 with the Good Friday blockbuster between South Mildura and Irymple.

In other football news, SFNL clubs were involved last weekend in a level 1 trainers’ course.

The course was provided free to all club representatives and was run by AFL Victoria.

Walker said it was important all clubs had appropriately trained staff acting as trainers.

“With both junior and senior competitions in football and netball playing during the day, the strain on trainer staff to accommodate all groups is quite high,” Walker said.

“The league is mindful of that and keen to ensure all member clubs have sufficiently trained staff in place to cover all requirements.”
