CALLS to change Sunraysia football’s age group structure have been renewed as several clubs contend with having the “bare minimum” number of under 18 players at the start of the season.
According to Sunraysia Football and Netball League player registration numbers, three clubs have fewer than 20 available under 18 players, while others have just enough to fill a side, assuming there are no injuries.
Wentworth, who suffered a 23.26 (164) to 0.1 (1) loss to Robinvale-Euston in round 1, had just 13 registrations or finalised player transfers for under 18 players as of yesterday.
Imperials president Peter O’Donnell said most clubs would be relying on under 16 players going up a grade to make up numbers this season and was concerned player number issues had arisen so early in the year.
“We’re in round 1, where everyone’s pretty excited, wait until we get to the middle of winter and kids are on holidays – it’s going to be a really difficult time,” O’Donnell said.
