Let’s back Mildura’s grand show

SUNRAYSIA, let’s show our support for the Mildura Grand Tennis International by getting along to next week’s tournament.

Let’s show the people who work so hard behind the scenes to put this great event on our appreciation.

Events of this stature should not be taken for granted, particularly in regional communities like ours.

The Mildura Grand Tennis International is a big deal for Sunraysia – name another sporting event in the region which draws players from all over the world.

You only have to look at some of the past winners to realise what a nursery for emerging players this event has become.

Women’s world No.1 Ash Barty won the event in 2012 and close friend and former doubles partner Casey Dellacqua, who is the guest speaker at this year’s ladies’ luncheon, also claimed the title, winning in 2010.

Australia’s top men’s player, Nick Kyrgios, is another who has graced the Mildura Lawn Tennis Club courts in recent years.

Name another sport in the region which can boast such an impressive list.

I think we take for granted the quality of players who turn up each year for the Mildura Grand Tennis International.

It’s why we need to fill the stands, not only to show our support for the players, but for the event organisers.

The Mildura Grand Tennis International comes together through the collaboration of many different organisations.

Getting spectators to turn out in force is the best possible recognition these unsung heroes can receive – it shows we care.

The Mildura Grand Tennis International is a big deal.

We need to show what this event means to us and how much as a sporting community we appreciate having it held in our region each year.

There has been speculation over the past couple of years support for the event has waned.

Whether this is true or not, let’s dispel the rumours by voting with our feet.

Let’s fill the stands, not only for the finals, but for each one of the seven days of the event.

These are elite players, some ranked inside the top 200 in the world, and we get to watch them play for free.

It’s not very often you get the chance to attend an event involving international players that costs you nothing.

Let’s make the 2020 event the best supported ever.
