SOUTH Mildura Sporting Club has had a lot of good news to talk about over recent weeks.
The problem is they aren’t talking.
Club officials have decided not to comment publicly on anything.
It’s a strange move given how many positive things have happened.
But the powers to be, in their wisdom, believe they are better off saying nothing.
They aren’t upset with the media, they just don’t want to leave themselves open to criticism like they did last season when their recruiting process was questioned and they finished on the bottom of the ladder.
It’s fair enough, I suppose. If you don’t create any expectations then you can’t get criticised if you fail.
Still, I find it a strange way to go about things.
Can you imagine Eddie McGuire taking this approach if Collingwood were coming off the wooden spoon.
McGuire would take the complete opposite approach and that is how South Mildura should be handling this situation.
He’d be out in the public forum telling everyone and anyone who would listen how good Collingwood are going to be and why.
By not talking, is South taking the easy option.
Sure, South copped some flak on social media about recruits last season, but that’s 12 months ago.
A lot has changed since then and president Mark Bresenhan and his team should be proud of what they have achieved to this point.
I know it’s a long season and there is still plenty to play out, but perception is a powerful thing.
Use the positives to create some hype and excitement, it’s amazing what it can do on many fronts.
South has landed three big-name recruits, posted a healthy profit and won the right to be the tenant club at the new Mildura South sporting precinct when it is completed.
All this has been announced in a matter of a few weeks, but the planning behind it has taken more than 12 months.
People aren’t stupid, what South has achieved so far isn’t good luck, it’s good management and people are starting to talk about how South are turning things around.
Be proud of this and embrace and ride the momentum and start talking about the positive things.
It’s been a long time since South Mildura has been in this position and they need to embrace it.
At the moment it’s like they are frightened of failure. Scared they will be criticised if they underachieve.
Why would you be?
The club has been able to put itself in this position with a lot of hard work and good planning.
Have faith in the structure and people you have in place and don’t be afraid to fail.
