ANOTHER name has been added to the list of hopefuls in the running for the Federal seat of Farrar with the Greens announcing that party’s candidate.
Albury-based mental health and all abilities advocate Richard Hendrie was named to the spot on the ballot for the party.
Living in Lavington, a rural suburb in the north east of Albury, Mr Hendrie was that municipality’s citizen of the year for 2024.
“I’ve seen and experienced firsthand the struggles our community is facing, from the rising cost of living, to limited access to health care and inadequate mental health support,” he said.
“A vote for the Greens sends a strong, clear message to the major parties that our region wants action on health and mental health, housing affordability and climate change.
“When one in three corporations in Australia pays no tax, the government shouldn’t get away with claiming we can’t afford the health services we deserve.”
Mr Hendrie was joined at his campaign launch in Albury on Thursday by New South Wales Greens upper house MP Dr Amanda Cohn, who endorsed the party’s candidate.
“Richard has a strong track record of advocating on behalf of our community, particularly around our needs in health, mental health and disability support,” she said.
“I have every confidence he will continue to speak up on the issues that matter.
“If we want change from our elected representatives, the first step is to vote for it.”
Currently the other confirmed candidates for Farrar include incumbent Liberal Sussan Ley, Labor’s Glen Hyde, Rebecca Scriven from Family First, and independent Michelle Milthorpe.
At the 2022 Federal election Ms Ley won the seat on a two-party preferred basis 66.4 per cent to Labor’s 33.6 per cent.
Candidate nominations for the May 3 vote close on April 11.
