AFTER standing down from Wentworth Shire in 2022 due to personal reasons, Greg Evans has again put his name forward for public office.
The paddleboat captain has re-entered the fray after some time away, eager to put the community at the forefront of council decision-making.
“We have so much happening in our shire, and there is huge development in housing and that’s going to become a management issue for council in years to come,” Mr Evans said.
“I’m excited about that, there’s challenges there but it certainly needs to be done with very good management and high levels of skill.”
He said with six years as a former councillor under his belt, and his experience in the tourism industry, he’s used to dealing with people and getting across the region’s issues.
“That’s part of my diplomacy, to be a good communicator,” he said.
“As a councillor you have to keep in touch with a lot of things.
“Treat people as individuals, treat them well, even if someone is not very happy with the day and what you’re doing. That’s part of life.”
Mr Evans attributes his passion for public life to his grandfather George and father Geoff.
“I’ve had family ties, I’ve been involved in this region all my life.
“My grandfather and father were great inspirations to me, they gave their time freely.”
He resigned from council less than a year after the death of his father, a well known entertainer in the region.
“I’ve been around long enough to know that you have to be effective in the role, and that’s a really important thing to me.
“If you’re not right, if you feel that you’re not contributing as well as you should … that was my decision at the time.”
He said he was hopeful to re-enter the fold, and looking forward to the election race ahead.
“Everyone has a skill base and I think that’s why we need a diverse council group, I think that’s where it’s heading,” he said. “We’ve got a great group of candidates with varied skills.
“Whichever way it goes, hopefully I might be seen as a reasonable candidate to represent the people of Wentworth Shire.”
