ELIGIBLE residents and taxpayers have been urged to check their enrolment status ahead of upcoming local council elections in Victoria.
Automatic enrolment is applied to people who are on the state electoral roll, however a change of address would require an update to ensure voters are enrolled at the right location.
Council enrolment categories for non-resident owners, occupiers, company nominees, and non-Australian citizens who pay rates have additionally been opened.
Property owners who do not live in a local government area but may have an eligibility to vote but may have a right to vote because the pay rates paid should contact the relevant municipality for further information.
“If you’re 18 or over and you live in or pay rates to a Victorian council, enrol and have your say on the future of your local council,” said Victorian Electoral Commissioner Sven Bluemmel.
Completing a ballot is compulsory and enrolled and/ or eligible voters who could have voted but don’t may be fined.
This year’s local council elections in the rural cities of Mildura and Swan Hill will be held by post with ballot packs set to be mailed to all enrolled voters by mid-October.
Completed ballot material must be mailed or delivered to the local government area’s election office by 6pm on Friday, October 26.
