Governor set for visit

SWAN Hill City Council voted in a unanimous decision to accept the invitation of Governor Margaret Gardner to visit Swan Hill.

The proposed dates for the visit are May 2 and 3 and Robinvale could be included.

Regional tours are an integral part of Professor Gardner’s official program, emphasising engagement with local communities, businesses, and institutions.

Swan Hill chief executive Scott Barber said the council would put forward suggestions for the itinerary, which could include a civic reception, visit to Pioneer Settlement or locations in Robinvale.

“It is up to the aide of Her Excellency to decide what they will or won’t do, but we will be giving them a number of ideas and consulting with the councillors,” Mr Barber said.

“The benefits will be that many people get to meet this person.

“Her Excellency has a background in infrastructure in academia and it helps build links between us and the State Government.”

Swan Hill Mayor Stuart King said the offer had come out of left field when the council received an email from the governor’s office in January.

“Visitors with stature and positions like that, I think, are always good visitors to have in our region to promote the area,” Cr King said.

“You never know what might come from a conversation. It might seem small at the time, but you never know where it is going to lead.

“It is an opportunity to get our region, Swan Hill and Robinvale, on the map and to also talk about some of our issues.

“The Governor is not directly in government, but she has a line of communication to the government so it’s another great opportunity to flag some of the needs and issues in our region.”
