Works for busy Mildura intersection

ONE of Mildura’s most notorious intersections is set to receive a major safety upgrade thanks to a $200,000 boost from the Victorian Government.

The funding comes from the government’s $1.4 billion investment into reducing road trauma across Victoria.

The intersection of the Calder Highway and Riverside Avenue will be upgraded over the next four weeks with a range of improvements to be carried out.

Improvements include new advance LED warning signs to alert drivers as they approach the intersection; concrete splitter islands; and a wider road surface and improved kerbing and line marking.

More than 5500 drivers use the intersection each day with works helping the overall safety and line of sight, particularly for drivers entering the intersection from Riverside Avenue.

Since September 2021, the intersection has been the site of three crashes resulting in three people suffering injuries.

Works are set to be completed over the next four weeks, with drivers advised for delays of up to five minutes.

Roads and Road Safety Minister Ben Carroll said that for the thousands of drivers who use the road each day, the upgrades would address the intersection’s “unacceptable” crash history and boost safety for all road users.

“We are building a road network that delivers more safe and reliable journeys, by delivering practical upgrades including more than 200 high-risk intersections,” Mr Carroll said.

Member for Northern Victoria Mark Gepp said whether drivers were heading home after work, visiting family or carrying local produce to be sold, the works would ensure the busy intersection would be more reliable for all motorists.

“The Calder Highway is one of Victoria’s busiest freight routes, but it’s also an important connection for northern Victorian communities – these people deserve a safer road,” he said.
