Tim Elstone will contest in Wentworth Shire mayoral vote

A NEW mayor will be elected to Wentworth Council on Monday following Melisa Hederics’ sudden resignation last week.

Deputy mayor Tim Elstone will contest the top job for the first time and said the council needed to forge ahead with the progress it had already made under Cr Hederics’ leadership.

“I’ve been the deputy for four years so I’ve got a pretty good understanding of what’s involved and what it takes,” Cr Elstone said.

“I’m committed, certainly to the community and the role, and more than willing to stand up.

“We’ve worked very hard to create relationships with State Government agencies and MPs, and that’s paid dividends in terms of how we’ve benefited from grants and various projects all over the district.”

Cr Elstone said he was not sure whether there would be any opposition for the role but noted the deputy and mayoral roles were not contested at the last election in September.

NSW local government elections were due to be held this year but were delayed 12 months due to COVID-19.

On October 30 Ms Hederics stepped down from the role she had held for four years, citing health and personal reasons.

The extraordinary meeting of council will be held on Monday at Buronga’s Midway Centre at 10am.
