Cupper claims defamation against Mildura mayor

MEMBER for Mildura Ali Cupper says she plans to launch legal action over comments made on Mildura Mayor Simon Clemence’s Facebook page last week.

Ms Cupper also took to Facebook at the weekend said she had prepared a full statement in response to allegations levelled by Cr Clemence and would engage a legal team to begin defamation proceedings.

Cr Clemence claimed Ms Cupper tried to influence last year’s vote for a new mayor when she attended a meeting of five councillors to discuss the upcoming mayoral election.

He described Ms Cupper was both “puppet master” and “king maker” and was “gob-smacked” that Ms Cupper was not only at the meeting but effectively chaired the discussion.

Also at the meeting were proposed mayor-to-be Jason Modica, his foreshadowed deputy Anthony Cirillo, Mark Eckel and Helen Healy, he said.

Cr Clemence said he feared being complicit with a “minefield” and described Ms Cupper’s involvement while a State MP as “wholly inappropriate”.
