WENTWORTH Shire Council mayor Melisa Hederics has handed in her immediate resignation.
A press release from the Wentworth Shire Council on Wednesday morning cited health and personal reasons for Mrs Hederics’ decision.
Deputy mayor Tim Elstone, who will temporarily fill the role, said the news came as a shock.
“We have worked well together with council and always strived to do our best for the community and residents,” he said.
“Melisa was a passionate, hard working Mayor, practical and straight to the point, she will be a great loss to the community and council.”
Wentworth Shire Council general manager Ken Ross praised Mrs Hederics’ work as mayor.
“Melisa has been a great advocate for so many members of the community across the whole region. I respect her decision and wish Melisa and her family the very best in the future.” he said.
In line with the Local Government Act, there will be an extraordinary meeting of Council held within 14 days, at which councillors will vote to elect a new mayor.
