New satellite mental health clinic for Mildura

THE Mildura region will be supported by a satellite HeadtoHelp mental health clinic to further support residents during the COVID-19 restrictions.

Member for Mallee Dr Anne Webster said the enhanced mental health service, delivered by Murray Primary Health Network (PHN), would be a welcome addition given the impact of COVID-19 restrictions and difficulties caused in the Mallee electorate by the recent NSW and South Australian border closures.

“I have received more than 700 emails of personal stories of how restrictions have impacted people in my electorate, with a vast majority talking about mental health concerns such as anxiety and depression,” Dr Webster said.

“Regional communities such as Mildura need this service and I have been lobbying the Minister for Health to ensure that we do not miss out in Mallee.”

Murray PHN chief executive Matt Jones said PHN mental health funding in the region had increased in recent years, but the pandemic had added another layer of mental health concern.

“This funding for the HeadtoHelp services, which are needs-based and recovery-focused, will add to the mental health capability in the north-west of Victoria and will help people find the best mental health service for their needs,” Mr Jones said.

“Our focus will be to provide help for people who need support with their mental health, often for the first time in their lives.

“It is important that services are tailored and structured to fit the specific mental health needs of each region.

“We will be working closely with existing providers including GPs and hospitals, referring people to more intensive mental health care or social supports if they need that level of help.”
The new HeadtoHelp hubs can offer clinical advice, referral and wrap-around care for Victorians struggling to cope with the COVID-19 pandemic.

Anyone in Victoria who needs help coping with the impact of COVID-19 and its restrictions can get access to HeadtoHelp services by calling 1800 595 212.
