Scott Morrison targets border closures for bush summit

PRIME Minister Scott Morrison will join national leaders to thrash out state border issues at a bush summit on Friday.

Mr Morrison told reporters on Thursday he shared the frustration of the community around border closures between states mandated by state governments.

“I can understand Australians are frustrated the border closures are not being addressed as well as we’d hope,” Mr Morrison said.

“I will continue to work to ensure we have a transparent and fair process, that there are appropriate appeal rights in place for people who are affected by these decisions.

“Because it does affect their lives.”

Mr Morrison said as the coronavirus situation in Victoria begins to ease following a devastating second wave that resulted in the state effectively being shut off from its neighbours, the Federal Government would continue to offer support to those affected.

“Victoria has turned the corner and we will continue to invest our efforts in assisting them to ensure that we can continue to get this job under control and return life in Melbourne and across Victoria as normal as you can,” he said.

“The restrictions should be in absolutely for as long as they are needed and only be placed in absolutely where they are needed based on that medical advice.

“It’s all about proportionality, when you are looking at a border between Victoria and New South Wales that’s one set of circumstances, in other places it’s different.”
