THE Mildura and District ALP branch has a new president and plan of attack for the next 12 months.
Jenny Gibbons joined Labor in 1976 and was recently elected to replace Peter Byrne as president.
After taking on a variety of roles over her time with the branch, Ms Gibbons said her presidency would be a good opportunity to strengthen the group and its members over the next year.
“We have some planning happening at the moment so we will hit the ground running next year,” she said.
“There shouldn’t be an election next year so we have the chance to grow and consolidate our branch which is what we are hoping to do.
“It’s an opportunity for a bit of development with our younger and newer members to maybe mentor and support them so they can take on some of these roles in the very near future.”
While Ms Gibbons only intends on being in the role for the short term, she hopes to use that time to address some of the community’s main concerns.
She said the group would continue to push for passenger rail in the region and climate action.
“We are certainly supporting the motion for a royal commission into the Murray-Darling Basin Plan, obviously that is of great concern to us here,” she said.
“I think with climate change it’s about acquiring as much knowledge as possible so we will have guest speakers who can give us some more information and hopefully put some pressure on our local National party member.”
