MILDURA police have urged motorists planning to make the most of a Melbourne Cup Day long weekend with a road trip to plan ahead and take extra precautions with an anticipated increase in like-minded people on regional roads.

Victoria Police’s five-day road safety operation -- Operation Furlong -- runs from today until Wednesday and will target drug and drink drivers, fatigue and speed.
