A MERBEIN man who threw a punch at a young girl as she walked to school, and claimed he was shadow boxing and didn't mean to startle her, has narrowly avoided a term of imprisonment.

The Mildura Magistrates' Court heard the pair, who were not known to each other, were walking on Commercial Street on the morning of April 22 this year when the incident happened.
