MILDURA police have pleaded with motorists to take extra care on the roads during the high-risk Christmas period, as Operation Roadwise gets under way.

Police have vowed to saturate major highways as well as arterial roads in and out of the region as families gather to celebrate the festive season.

And they've warned revellers not to risk miscalculating and driving after a "few drinks".
