Care for a carer

THIS week marks National Carers Week (12–18 October 2025), a time to stop and recognise the selfless work of the more than 750,000 unpaid carers across Victoria. These are the people who support family, friends, and loved ones living with disability, health challenges, mental illness, or age-related conditions.

Many of us know what that caring role looks like. In my own family, my grandmother lived with us for many years. I saw firsthand the love, patience and time that goes into caring for someone you love. It’s deeply rewarding, but it can also be tough – physically, emotionally, and sometimes financially.

Too often, carers say they feel worn out, lonely and unrecognised. That’s why National Carers Week is so important; it’s our chance to say thank you and to remind carers that we see them, and we value what they do.

This year, Carers Victoria is encouraging everyone to “Care for a Carer”. Check in on someone you know who’s in a caring role, offer a hand, or just let them know they’re not alone. Even the smallest act of kindness can mean the world.

Across Victoria, local events, social media campaigns, and initiatives like the Light-Up Victoria campaign are shining a light on the incredible work carers do. Across the region, I encourage everyone to get involved, show your support, and remind our carers that they are seen and appreciated.

We’re fortunate within the Mildura electorate to have local carer support groups who are always ready to listen and lend a hand. Please contact my office if you would like information on a carer support group in your area.
