They are the ones helping to put meals on the tables, assisting the elderly, providing friendship for the lonely, giving counsel and comfort to the fragile, keeping our local sports clubs running, and providing a vibrant social calendar for the locals.
There is so much that local volunteers do, without complaint or grumble. They dedicate their time and effort to helping others.
Earlier this week, the Federal Government’s Volunteer’s Grants were announced. I’m pleased to say that 32 successful organisations and community groups were successful in Mallee. The grants aim to increase local participation, strengthen member support and safety, provide training and access equipment local organisations need. A little goes a long way in grassroots organisations.
Volunteering is a proven pathway to employment, reduce isolation and increase community participation.
COVID-19 has resulted in volunteer organisations being greatly impacted and this funding has come at a pivotal time for many.
Having been heavily involved in the local not-for-profit sector before being elected to office, I know first-hand the strain and the fatigue that can rest on the shoulders of volunteers of grassroots organisations. I also know how exciting and relieving financial investment can be.
Volunteering is such a rich and rewarding experience, motivated out of care for others and a commitment to the common good. It’s in these places that you will find some of the best community mentors and people with interesting, rich and diverse backgrounds.
This Sunday is International Volunteers Day – a moment to shine a light on the selfless work they do and express our gratitude for their service. It’s also a time to encourage others who might consider giving time to join in. An opportunity to become part of the growing number who experience the rewards of giving in community life. It is also great way to meet new people.
Investing into volunteering is a key priority of The Nationals in government. These are resilient, selfless and hard-working people who make our communities better and stronger.
