de Pieri: Business leaders build strength

SATURDAY’S Sunraysia Daily presents another profile of a successful business identity in this district with GTS Freight Group managing director Damian Matthews.

These profiles are not intended to glorify successful people. They merely highlight the economic strength of our community.

Naturally, the success stories also emphasise the creativity, ingenuity and commitment of the protagonists of these profiles.

Too often in Australia we tend to cut down the “tall poppies”, those who take risks, those who are passionate and stand up for whatever reason.

In these times of COVID-19, the profiles are also intended to unite and celebrate while we confront adversity.

Not everyone, of course, is affected by adversity. Indeed transport, agriculture, food retail, education and other sectors do very well.

Conversely tourism, hospitality and entertainment generally are under immense pressure. But at least we can take comfort in the fact that we have enough variety in our economy to keep this region afloat.

Melbourne and Sydney may soon experience a 30 per cent drop in real estate prices, according to some estimates.

Here we do not seem to be heading for such catastrophes and we have to be grateful to those who are keeping this economy relatively strong.
