IT’S all very anti-climactic with no grand finals this weekend to decide winners in all grades of Sunraysia cricket.
But let’s face it, this COVID-19 pandemic that forced the cancellation of the grand finals is a rolling situation that’s changing by the hour and you cannot blame the SCA for making the call.
For all the backlash, particularly in social media it’s worth remembering the SCA board, headed by president Andrew Farlie, are all good cricket people and would have certainly wanted the grand final to go ahead.
They didn’t make the decision lightly.
But, for example, look at the cancellation of the Innes Medal night – which was supposed to be yesterday.
On Tuesday, when the SCA made the announcement. 500 people for a gathering was fine, but Wednesday morning that became 100 people for indoors.
With eight SCA clubs maybe getting 10 people each to go, plus umpires, sponsors and board members that 100 number would certainly have been breached for the venue.
Who is to say things won’t change again before the scheduled start of play?
In First Division at least, Settlers were the best side all year and deserved the silverware.
But at the same time nobody is happy about not getting to play, Settlers players would much rather have proven themselves in the grand final.
The same goes for Workers Gol Gol, they had done the work to get to where they were, and that rings true for all teams throughout the grades.
It sucks that there’s no grand final to end the season but remember this is a small part of the world and the world is going through a pretty big global crisis right now.
We can only play the cards as they fall.
