A SEVERE weather warning for the Mallee on Monday afternoon has been declared by the Bureau of Meteorology.
Destructive winds are expected to develop near elevated terrain on Sunday night, with the strong winds expected to become more widespread through western Victoria as a cold front tracks through.
Winds averaging 50 to 60 km/h with damaging wind gusts of more than 90km/h are possible from Monday afternoon, before extending to parts of central Victoria in the evening.
While sun is expected in the morning, there is a medium chance of showers in the afternoon and evening, as well as the chance of raised dust.
The Victorian State Emergency Service has advised people to avoid travel where possible if driving conditions are dangerous, and to safely pull over away from trees, drains, low-lying areas and any floodwaters.
Dangerous hazards including mud, debris, damaged roads and fallen trees are best avoided, vehicles where possible should be moved under cover or away from trees, and fallen powerlines should be assumed as live.
Loose items including outdoor settings, umbrellas and trampolines should be secured, and it is best to move to a safe place indoors and away from windows.
Winds are expected to ease below warning thresholds by Monday evening, and frequent updates will be posted to the Vic Emergency Facebook page and app, as well as the BOM website.
