THE nation is tracking 22 per cent above the recent average for drownings this summer, with Royal Life Saving Australia warning of the danger of combining alcohol and swimming ahead of the Australia Day Weekend.

There have been 67 drownings from December 1, 12 above the five-year average and five more than at the same stage last year.
