THIS year's Australian Alternative Varieties Wine Show at Mildura has been described as the best opportunity for growers to showcase and benchmark "alternative" wine varieties against the best in the country.

The AAVWS aims to track the growing demand for alternative varieties in both domestic and export markets, and has been credited for elevating once-marginalised varieties, including pinot grigio,
