CHILDREN in the region are being encouraged to take up fishing as a hobby.

The State Government have stocked 80 lakes across the state with more than 35,000 catchable-size rainbow trout ahead of the winter school holidays.

At least 10,000 of the fish have been put into lakes across northern Victoria, including at Ouyen.
