A LIGHTNING strike has damaged the centre runway at Mildura airport, delaying outbound flights and rerouting arrivals.

A bolt ripped up the tarmac as a storm rolled in before 10am, and ground crews are working to repair the damage as soon as possible to restore commercial flights.

Mildura Airport chief executive Trevor Willcock said the repair team was hoping to seal the runway by about 230pm.
