Bush Nippers back in the swim

MILDURA Life Saving Club's Bush Nippers program is back for the coming summer.

The Nippers program begins on November 11 at the Mildura Waves.

The program helps teach kids water safety skills and how to identify hazards in the river.

Nippers co-ordinator Dan Rosendahl said the program was starting away from the river so the kids could be assessed in a "controlled environment".

"(The first session) is just to work out how good the Nippers can swim," he said.

"At each age they have a different kind of proficiency that they need to pass.

"If a Nipper can't pass that proficiency, it doesn't rule them out from being in the water, we generally just have to take extra precaution like ensuring they're wearing a life jacket, things like that."

Mr Rosendahl said the program was even open to kids who couldn't swim as the club would put extra safety measures in for them.

He said the Nippers would swim in the river throughout the program using Nipper boards.

The program is the same as those run across country at other life saving clubs.

Following the first session in November, the club will run a pre-school holiday water safety program.

The full program will run every Sunday in February, before a mini-carnival in March.

People interested can contact the club to get involved.
